Siennas are one of the oldest pigments used by mankind and these natural iron oxides are known for their durability. They are both lightfast and chemical resistant and as such they are considered permanent pigments.
Raw Siennas are one of the most versatile pigments on the market today. They are used in almost any application, but are most often recognized as one of the prime pigments used for stains and glazes in wood coatings because of their transparency and yellow tone. When people picture the woods oak and pine, they most often are picturing those woods stained with a Raw Sienna.
Siennas are one of the oldest pigments used by mankind and these natural iron oxides are known for their durability. Burnt Siennas build on the lightfastness and chemical resistance of Raw Siennas and add improved heat stability. Raw Siennas are naturally occurring iron-hydroxides, which convert to iron oxides upon heat treatment. This is how we get the term “Burnt Sienna”.

Umbers are one of the oldest pigments used by mankind and these natural iron oxides are known for their durability. They are both lightfast and chemical resistant and as such they are considered permanent pigments. Raw Umbers are based on the naturally occurring Umber ore.
One of the characteristics that make Raw Umber such a useful pigment is that it is a “neutral toner.” Often brighter coloured pigments are too bright (or have too much chroma) for a given application. Adding a black pigment to darken these colors adds an undesirable colour component from the black. Raw Umbers maintain a neutral tone, reducing a brighter pigment’s chroma without affecting the hue. As a result, Raw Umbers are a major component in today’s Architectural Coatings colouring systems and other tinting systems.
